So You Want to Become a Writer?

In today’s economic climate, it’s not surprising that more and more people are looking for alternatives to the 9-5 job. If you enjoy writing and want to become a writer, then freelancing online could be ideal for you.

Most people have no idea how to get started in freelance writing online, so they just don’t. They don’t want to sink time and energy and even money into something that might not pan out. That’s very valid, but the fact is that there are content sites begging for writers at the moment! They are desperate to get as much useful content as possible and they are willing to pay for it.

That means you have an excellent chance of finding work. Sure, there is competition, but there are methods of skipping past all those other writers and finding the most lucrative jobs. Just how lucrative really depends on what area of writing you want to get into. Copywriting pays considerably more than just doing search engine optimized articles or blog posts, but it also requires more skill and time. The trick to getting the best jobs is not to look where everyone else is looking, but to go straight to the client.

Applying for jobs will be the main part of your strategy in the beginning when you want to become a writer, but that doesn’t mean you should stop looking for work once you have a few assignments. Many writers leave off looking for work because they are busy with clients, but guess what? If you do that, you’ll end up back in the same boat once those clients run out of work for you! That means you need to constantly be patrolling for new opportunities, making connections and getting your name out there as a writer. It’s not a job that you can really lay back and wait for the money to pour in, you really do need to do the work. If you can impress enough clients, you can raise your rates and when that happens, you’ll be able to pick and choose your jobs.

Most writers find that once they are well established, their clients will recommend new clients and they rarely need to look for new jobs. However, the best writers will always keep their ear to the ground so they are ready if anything goes wrong.

If you really want to become a writer, you will need to put in some work. It doesn’t usually happen overnight, but with a little elbow grease and a few hot samples, you should be able to start earning fairly soon.
